Keys to a Great Brand: Identity Design for Pittsburgh Piano Bar

Pittsburgh Piano Bar

Logo Design

Some of the most fun projects come from the people closest to you. When my friend Daniel asked me to help build the brand identity for his new venture, Pittsburgh Piano Bar, I was excited to jump in. Daniel is a pianist and entertainer who brings live piano karaoke, curated sing-a-longs, and cabaret-style entertainment directly to his clients: restaurants, bars, corporate events, private parties, and more. The piano bar experience, minus the fixed address.

That concept shaped every design decision from the very beginning.

Designing for a Business That’s Built to Grow

Pittsburgh Piano Bar is, at its heart, a mobile entertainment business. Daniel comes to you, bringing the energy, the music, and the communal joy of a piano bar experience to whatever venue or event needs it. But there was an important creative consideration baked into this project from day one: the brand needed to work beautifully for the mobile experience right now, while also being flexible enough to grow into a physical location somewhere down the road.

That’s a meaningful design challenge. A brand built too narrowly around the “we come to you” concept could feel out of place on a brick-and-mortar storefront one day. A brand built too broadly might fail to capture the energy and personality that makes the mobile experience special. The goal was to land somewhere timeless enough to do both.

The Logo

The logo needed to feel like Pittsburgh, feel like live entertainment, and feel like a place you’d want to spend an evening. Even if that “place” is wherever Daniel sets up his piano.

The result is a mark with serious presence. A bold, ornate badge shape frames the “Pittsburgh Piano Bar” wordmark in rich gold and black. A palette that immediately reads as sophisticated, lively, and a little bit theatrical. The typography has a classic, slightly Art Deco quality that evokes vintage signage and jazz-age glamour without feeling dated. At the crown of the badge, a row of piano keys arches overhead, making the musical identity of the business unmistakable at a glance. Flanking the wordmark on either side, two microphones reinforce the live performance and sing-a-long nature of the experience.

The badge shape itself is the key to the logo’s versatility. It reads like a venue sign, the kind you’d see hanging above a door on a city street, which means it will translate just as naturally to a physical location as it does to business cards, social media, and event materials today.

The Business Card

The business card extends the brand into two distinct pieces that work together as a set.

The front of the card leads with the full logo set against a rich black background, with a delicate gold-line illustration of the Pittsburgh skyline stretching behind it, a nod to the city that gives the brand its name and grounds it in a specific sense of place. Daniel’s name, title as Founder & Pianist, and the three pillars of his entertainment offering (Live Piano Karaoke, Curated Sing-A-Longs, Cabaret-Style Entertainment) are set cleanly beneath the logo alongside his contact details.

The back of the card shifts to a warm gold and leans into the mobile experience directly: bold script announcing “The Piano Bar Experience That Comes to You!” over a dramatic close-up of piano keys, with a QR code and a clean breakdown of the event types he serves: restaurants, bars and hospitality venues, corporate and nonprofit events, private parties and celebrations, recurring engagements, and themed nights.

Together the two sides of the card tell the complete story of Pittsburgh Piano Bar in the space of a single hand-held piece.

Building a brand for a friend’s new business is always a special kind of project. There’s a deeper investment in getting it right. Not just professionally, but personally. Pittsburgh Piano Bar has the logo and the identity it deserves, and I can’t wait to watch Daniel bring the music to venues all across Pittsburgh and beyond.
